Truth, Lies & Brownies

So, Lee tagged me over the weekend to post six lies and a truth about myself. It was harder than I thought! I decided that it’s much easier to come up with truths than it is to come up with lies.

Oh, and for the record, I started a list of lies today and left it on my desk at work. None of them were inappropriate, but how embarassing would it be if someone read my list of eccentric statements?

Here goes nothing… which one is the truth?

1. I was born in the Midwest, but my family moved to Pennsylvania when I was really young.

2. My mom entered me into a handful of child beauty pageants when I was little. Think Toddlers & Tiaras. Yeah, that didn’t last very long.

3. I have three tattoos- one on my hip, one on my lower back, and one on my foot.

4. I have really neat handwriting. When I was growing up, my hand used to shake when I was writing because I was so concerned with having perfect handwriting.

5. I was valedictorian of my high school class.

6. In college, I made money by signing up students for credit cards in exchange for free pizza. We all know that college kids love pizza, so that job was pretty easy!

7. I rarely let myself cry because I think that it’s a sign of weakness. Don’t even get me started on people who cry at work…

On Friday, I said that I would be putting raspberry sauce on everything I eat until it’s gone. Well, it tastes great on oatmeal, but tonight I tried it in TJ’s No Pudge brownies! I swirled it in with a knife before baking.

I’ll be back this week to reveal THE TRUTH. 🙂

Return of Hot Yoga

Happy Friday!

I decided to do something different today- go to hot yoga! Hot yoga was my main form of exercise for two years (minus the summers- too hot!), so it was weird that I hadn’t been there since December.

Here’s the thing about hot yoga- it’s expensive, time-consuming, and each class is always the same 26 poses. When I ran out of classes in December, I just decided to let it go and give my budget some breathing room.

I really like the yoga classes at my gym, but my love for hot yoga may have been re-ignited after tonight’s class! Maybe I’ll get a 10 class pack for some variation in my workouts. What do you think? Do you belong to a gym or yoga studio? Are you happy with what you get for what you pay?

By the time I got home, it was 7:30 and I knew that I wanted something easy and meatless (since I don’t eat meat on Fridays during Lent). Dr. Praeger’s to the rescue!

What’s your favorite brand of veggie burgers?

I had the veggie burger on bagel thins, with spicy chipotle sweet potato fries on the side.

And you know that dessert comes next!

I put ~1/2 a bag of frozen raspberries into a saucepan, simmered them for about 10 minutes, and added 2 tbs of sugar. I didn’t strain the seeds out, but you definitely could if they bother you.

There was a lot of raspberry sauce leftover, so I’ll definitely be putting it on oatmeal and everything else that I eat for the next two days! 😉

I put the raspberry sauce on top of a scoop of Trader Joe’s nonfat plain (tart) frozen yogurt. On the side, I had a TJ’s lemon bar.

I loved this combo- raspberry and lemon go so well together!

I just watched the premiere of Real Housewives of New York. It seems like it’s going to be an intense season and I “need” a show to replace The Bachelor. Maybe The Bachelor is refusing to replace his turtleneck with something else, but I won’t refuse a drama-filled TV show!

It snowed again today! I looked out my window at work, saw the flurries, and thought for sure that the office was going to close early. But no! The snow never stuck to the ground. The fact that it has snowed in Atlanta twice in the last month is just weird!

Who wasted three hours watched The Bachelor finale last night? I did, I did! I had the theme song – On the Wings of Love – stuck in my head all day… awful! Were you surprised that Jake chose Vienna? I will be shocked if they end up getting married… it just seems like he spends so much time defending her and explaining her immaturity. My favorite part of the episode was when Neil Lane showed up… Jake did pick a gorgeous (free?) engagement ring! Oh, and lets not even get into the fact that Jake is going to be on DANCING WITH THE STARS?! Thoughts?

Onto tonight’s dinner…

Leftovers! (I made this on Sunday.)

I put the leftover Trader Joe’s masala simmer sauce into a pan with a little water (the jar said to do this but it diluted the sauce too much, in my opinion), along with boneless chicken pieces, and simmered it for ~15 minutes. Easy enough!

I had the chicken with brown rice, and roasted chickpeas on the side. I had chickpeas in the fridge, so I just tossed them with olive oil, s + p, and roasted them at 400* for 25 minutes. I love picking up little “recipes” from the blog world- they’re always tried & true!

Snyder’s pretzel sticks, dipped in Nutella! This jar doesn’t stand a chance with me. 😉

What’s your favorite way to eat Nutella?

I like it in gelato, or on pretzels or toasted bread!

Dessert from Heaven

On the day of love,

I had a life-changing dessert. Introducing…

Murphy’s dessert trio!

*Bonzo cake-layer of fudge brownie, cheesecake, and dark chocolate mousse

*Vanilla bean panna cotta

*Tollhouse pie- white and dark chocolate, walnuts, oreo crust

You guys… I died and went to heaven on Valentine’s Day. You see, Tobey and I were supposed to have dinner across the street at La Tavola, an Italian restaurant. We stopped into Murphy’s for a glass of wine, and I saw that the couple next to us at the bar had the dessert trio.

I couldn’t stop talking about it, so Tobey asked me if I wanted to eat dessert before dinner. Well, I knew that I’d ruin my dinner if I did that, so we just stayed and had dinner at the bar. I ordered a couple of small plates (goat cheese salad and crispy flatbread), and enjoyed THIS for dessert:

The bonzo cake (brownie, cheesecake, mousse) was, hands down, my favorite. I cut it in half and took half home for later. I guess I was pretty territorial with this dessert because Tobey asked me on more than one occasion what he was “allowed” to eat.

Have you had a good dessert lately? Or, do you prefer salty over sweet?

I can’t wait to tell you guys about the Nutella milkshake that I had over the weekend. 🙂

Oh, how I love Thursday nights. It feels so good to know that the weekend is so close. 🙂

I love Thursdays even more now that I have Karen’s yoga class to look forward to. I used to take her class at Crunch and I’m so glad that I’ve recently reconnected with her. I enjoy all types of yoga, but I jive with her style of teaching so well.

First off, she’s from South Africa so her accent is so calming. I don’t know if that’s the right way to describe it, but that’s the first word that came to mind.

Second, she’s really in tune with what her students want/need. Her classes are so balanced- challenging, but not so intense that it’s frustrating. She spends probably ten minutes on the final savasana, which I appreciate so much. I definitely fell asleep for a few minutes at the end tonight, but left feeling so refreshed. Yoga nidra, anyone?

Do you practice yoga? If so, what do you love most about it? If not, what is holding you back? I really love the awareness that yoga brings to me- it’s the best strengthening workout I have ever done, yet it also allows me to test my limits and learn so much about myself. Oh, and I can attest to the fact that yoga helps you to sleep better. 🙂

For dinner, I had leftover TJ’s mushroom & cheese flatbread. The flatbread was pretty small- I thought I’d still be hungry after I ate this, but it was surprisingly rich and flavorful.

For dessert, I had a fudgy, under-baked brownie. I used Trader Joe’s version of No Pudge brownies to make these the other night- I can’t remember if they are lowfat or nonfat, but they’re pretty good. I added a carton of vanilla nonfat yogurt & a 1/2 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips to the mix and baked them for ~20 minutes.

The fact that I didn’t leave them in for long enough makes them even better… 😉

A scoop of ice cream went on this right after the picture!

I’m going to make every attempt to go to bed by 11 tonight… I have been staying up way too late lately. At least it’s almost time to sleep in the weekend!

Monday Funday

Oh, Monday!

I ran errands during lunch and after work, so the day went by pretty quickly. After work, I stopped at UPS to ship back a Christmas gift (I was waiting until I found a new gym bag to return the one that I got for Christmas!) and then I headed over to Sephora.

I got this really cool fragrance set last month. It included samples of 12 different perfumes, and a coupon to redeem for a full size bottle of whichever one you like best. i’ve been wearing the same perfume (Chanel No 5) for the last 3 or 4 years, so it was definitely time for a change! Do you wear the same perfume every day or do you switch it up?

After trying one per day, I narrowed it down to either Stella McCartney Nude, or Flower by Kenzo. I ended up with…

Flower by Kenzo!

Next, I headed over to yoga class. I joined this gym after falling in love with their class schedule- they have so many yoga classes and my favorite yoga instructor from Crunch picked up a class there.

After stopping at Trader Joe’s, I got home just in time for The Bachelor. I made dinner while I watched Jake win over the ladies with his words awkwardness.

I sauteed that blend of celery, carrots and onions with salt and parsley , let it simmer for ~10 minutes, and then added ground turkey. While that was cooking, I baked two peppers in the oven for 20 minutes at 375*.

Time to stuff the pepper!

It was simple & healthy- perfect for a weeknight dinner. The TJ’s vegetable blend was great; I’ll definitely buy it again and would love to make a soup with it.

Next, it was time for dessert while I watched the most dramatic rose ceremony yet.

Publix chocolate chip oatmeal cookie ice cream… the description says it all!

What’s your favorite brand of ice cream? I love Edy’s, but Publix is a close second.

Oh Friday night… I love knowing that I have the whole weekend ahead of me! I’m using a personal day on Monday (to study), so I’m looking forward to a LONG weekend. What are you looking forward to?

I went to the gym after work, and did the following:

  • Ran 3 miles in 29 minutes
  • Walked for 15 minutes at 4.0

I don’t run very often, but I was in the mood to tonight and it felt good!

When I got home, I heated up some leftover spicy basil and rice for dinner.

Can you guess what I had for dessert?

A chewy chocolate graham bar! I got a better picture tonight of the bar in all its glory…

It’s kind of like a cross between a seven layer bar and a s’more. I really have no words for it other than delicious!

Do you have a favorite dessert?

Relaxation time! I haven’t decided if I’m going to yoga in the morning, or if I’m going to get right into studying and exercise later…

Have a great night!
